To conform to Australian Building Codes stipulate emergency and exit lighting installed in public buildings is required to be maintained to current Australian Standard AS/NZS 2293:1995.
Periodic maintenance and inspection procedures are outlined in Australian-New Zealand Standard 2293.2:1995, and are essential in ensuring emergency evacuation lighting systems are in a state of readiness for operation at all times. Labeling of connected circuits and at the units themselves, ensures correct and easy identification for testing and maintaining records for each individual unit. The internal backup batteries inside each unit can deteriorate over time. All units are required to pass a 90 minute run test during testing. Records of regular testing and any repairs carried out are required to be maintained and records kept on premises. Older style units containing fluorescent lamps or tubes, require replacing at regular intervals to ensure sufficient illumination over the life of the unit. Signs and light diffusers are also required to be cleaned and maintained to ensure adequate visibility and to prevent the build up of bugs and insects.
