Heating Elements
The heating element inside a storage hot water heater can fail over time. They can usually be easily replaced with a new replacement, however, if the tank is severely aged and corroded, it may not be possible to make a reliable repair. The only option at this stage is a full tank replacement. Temperature control thermostats
The thermostat is the device that shuts the heating element off once the tank has reached temperature. They consist of a pair of thin metal diaphragms that operate a switches inside and can fail over time due to fair wear and tear. They have a fail safe design that prevents the tank from severely overheating if it fails. Rooftop solar water heaters
Most rooftop solar water heaters have a backup electric element and thermostat at the storage tank. These are usually controlled via a timed 'booster' switch or simply switched on and off at the homes switchboard as the weather changes and a boost is required. Much like a standard electric storage water heater, they can be repaired so you don't need to go without hot water on those cloudy and rainy days. Sacrificial anodes
Most metal hot water storage tanks will have a sacrificial anode installed inside of the tank. The purpose of this sacrificial anode is in its name, it is 'sacrificed' to extend the life of the metal tank as it will corrode before the tank does. But they don't last forever. Water quality can effect the length of the anodes life, however a life of around 5-15 years can be expected in most circumstances. Anodes can be changed but it is usually more economical to have the whole unit replaced if it is showing signs of corrosion and leaks. |
